The day started out just like any other day.

Coffee first, of course! Load the truck, hook up the trailer, a stop at the supply house, & go make an old, tired house look better….

kansas-city-shower-makeover-1The objective today is to rescue a 7 year old shower in Prairie Village. I looked at it last week and found that the installer did a beautiful tile job, but he made one fatal mistake. And often that is the reason that I get called in. That one fatal mistake.

kansas-city-shower-makeover-2The installer had a custom shower base poured that did in fact fit the available space perfectly. But, for some unknown reason did not pay the extra to have a slab made into a legitimate shower base with tile lips on the sides and a curb built into it. When I was able to slide a hack saw blade straight under the corner tile and drywall, clear into the stud space without forcing or bending it, I knew that the shower would have to be rebuilt. The base lacked a tile lip that would keep it from leaking.

We decided to try removing only the bottom rows of tile enough to get the new base in (getting the old base was not an issue as it would come out in pieces…..). In a leap of faith I took out the bottom corner tile and estimated all four sides from what I could see of the front and back corners.

When opened up completely, it was as I expected.

As constructed, this shower was doomed to leak, and it did. In more places than the customers were even aware of yet. The lower picture shows it was leaking around all 3 sides and under the curb that he built.

kansas-city-shower-makeover-4I love it when a plan works. The new base fit perfectly. Onyx does make a beautiful product, available in any size and almost 100 colors, and when the installer plans well, (reads as: gets lucky), it fits perfectly.

As you can see, the customer has a flair for color and design, and selected some great tile to complement the walls of the shower that we were saving.kansas-city-shower-makeover-5

The shower door cleaned up wonderfully and was re-installed, by Petty Products, of course, resulting in another huge cost saving. The customers were very happy and once again, I was able to solve a mystery. This one as to why a relatively young shower was leaking like a sieve.

“WOW! We were totally shocked to go into our hall bath and see JOCO Bath’s handy work.  The transformation from an old 80’s style bathroom to a bathroom that is modern was painless for us.  Brent was able to take our old bathroom and turn it into something worth showing off!  Thanks for all your hard work and the fantastic craftsmanship.”
